CODE FOR SUSTAINABLE HOMES![]()
Our Sustainability Department has licensed Code for Sustainable Homes Assessors to carry out pre-assessments, formal assessments and advise you on designing to achieve the optimum Code for Sustainable Homes rating.
What is the Code for Sustainable Homes?
The Code measures the sustainability of a new home against categories of sustainable design, rating the ‘whole home’ as a complete package. There are nine categories with points assigned to each category. The categories are as follows:

Each category includes a number of environmental issues which are a source of impact on the environment. These are assessed against performance criteria and awarded one or more credits. These performance criteria are more demanding than the minimum standard needed to comply with Building Regulations or other legislation.
There are also mandatory minimum performance standards that are set for some issues namely,
- Environmental Impacts of Materials,
- Management of Surface Run-Off from developments,
- Storage of non-recyclable waste and recyclable household waste,
- Construction site waste management,
CSH Ratings
The Code uses a 1 to 6 star rating system to communicate the overall sustainability performance of a new home. A home assessed as 6 stars will have achieved the highest sustainability rating.
1* Homes will be 10% more energy efficient and 20% more water
efficient than most new homes
3* Homes will be 25% more energy efficient and have many more
sustainable features than a 1« home
4* Homes will be 44% more energy efficient and have many more
sustainable features than a 1« home
6* Homes will be highly sustainable and over the course of the year
their net carbon emissions would be zero.
